Australia to get new positioning datum
Australia sits on one of the most active tectonic plates on Earth. As such, our current positioning datum is 1.8 metres out from GPS positioning. So in 2017 a new datum is being introduced to correct this. The video below is a good layman’s explanation:

Researchers are working on a centimetre accurate GPS system with a small antenna they hope to make even smaller so as to be included in future smart phones. The applications for people working land management in the field are enormous. Definitely something to keep an eye on.
